Updated Residential Code of Ohio Interpretation – Protection of Lightweight Framing

The Board of Building Standards has updated its interpretation of the Residential Code of Ohio (RCO) regarding protection of lightweight framing.  The update includes changes as a result of provisions being relocated from Section 502.14 to Section 302.13 in the RCO as well as adding the following clarification regarding intent:

The general intent is to provide a protective layer between a living space, basement, storage area, or a space containing a fuel fired appliance and the underside of engineered light frame floor construction that delays structural degradation and failure due to heat or ignition. This protective layer does not have to be constructed to the same rigor as a fire-rated assembly, including where penetrations for building services occurs. It should be understood as if the following IRC Section 302.13 language was included: “Penetrations or openings for ducts, vents, electrical outlets, lighting, devices, luminaires, wires, speakers, drainage, piping, and similar openings or penetrations shall be permitted.”
